One of the most important steps in your plastic surgery journey is the initial consultation. During this appointment, your surgeon will review your medical history, perform a physical examination, and ensure you are a good candidate for surgery. Additionally, you can expect your surgeon to ask you one very important question: Why do you want to have plastic surgery performed?

This question is an important way for your surgeon to verify that you are opting to have surgery for an acceptable reason. Your motives really do matter, and if your reason for wanting surgery is a good one, your surgeon may decline to do the procedure.

Good Reasons to Seek Plastic Surgery

Correcting a Flaw that Has Been Bothering You

Many of us have aspects of our body that cause frustration or lead us to feel self-conscious. For example, you may dislike the size of your breasts or fret about breast asymmetry. In other cases, the issue might be that your nose is not proportional to the rest of your face. If there is an issue that has bothered you for a long time, seeking plastic surgery may be a perfectly reasonable decision.

Restoring a Youthful Appearance

There are many plastic surgery procedures that can minimize the signs of the aging process and restore a more youthful countenance. For example, a facelift can be an effective way to minimize wrinkles, fine lines, and sagging skin on the lower two-thirds of the face. A desire to look younger is a perfectly acceptable motivation for plastic surgery.

Enhancing Your Self-Esteem

A third reason to pursue plastic surgery is that you want to feel more confident in your appearance. If you have done your due diligence and have a clear understanding of both your potential results and risks, and if you believe plastic surgery will bolster your self-image, then take the next steps in the plastic surgery process. That means meeting with your surgeon to discuss the best options for treatment.

Bad Reasons to Seek Plastic Surgery

Impressing Someone Else

Seeking plastic surgery because you want it is one thing. Seeking plastic surgery because someone else wants it is another topic entirely. Plastic surgery is a deeply personal decision, and it is a decision you should make for yourself. Getting surgery to please someone else is always a poor idea.

Getting Revenge

Believe it or not, “revenge plastic surgery” is common. Many patients wish to have a cosmetic procedure because they wish to get back at an ex or cause a former lover to regret severing the relationship. Again, plastic surgery should never be about other people. You should only get plastic surgery when it is important to you and the way you perceive yourself.

Saving a Relationship

Here is another example of how people get plastic surgery based on what other people want or on what they think other people want. If your marriage or relationship is in trouble, there may be some issues that go deeper than physical appearance. Seek counseling or therapy but avoid having surgery just because you think it will make your partner more likely to stay.

Healing Emotional Turmoil

Plastic surgery will not help you heal from an emotionally challenging season. In fact, your plastic surgeon will want to ensure that you are in a stable emotional headspace before agreeing to do surgery.
