A Guide to The Tummy Tuck – Abdominoplasty Procedure

Many of us turn to diet and exercise when we want to shed a few pounds, but what do we do if we are left with loose, excess skin that has lost its elasticity? The solution may be abdominoplasty – commonly referred to as a tummy tuck. This cosmetic procedure flattens the abdomen by removing excess skin and tightening the muscles. It sounds a bit like liposuction, and in some cases an abdominoplasty may be combined with liposuction, but the two are vastly different.

Who is a Candidate for a Tummy Tuck?

Undergoing a tummy tuck is a suitable option for both men and women. You must, however, be in good health.

Women who have experienced several pregnancies may consider the operation useful to tighten their abdominal muscles once more and to reduce extra skin from the pregnancy.

Furthermore, a tummy tuck is worthwhile for both men and women who recently lost a lot of weight. After significant weight loss, excess skin and fat deposits typically hang around the belly. These deposits are unsightly and lower the confidence of the individual.

How to Prepare

When selecting a surgeon, you’ll begin with a simple consultation. It is at this point that you should discuss your goals and options.

If you smoke, your surgeon will request you stop for at least two weeks before the operation. This is not a temporary request, however. You must quit altogether. Smoking complicates the healing process significantly.

Before taking any medications, including prescriptions or supplements, speak with your doctor. Your surgeon may request you cease certain medicines for a time.

Tummy Tuck Recovery

Typically, most patients will return to their daily activities and routines within two weeks. For months afterward, you may not feel like yourself, however, this is completely normal.

During the first few weeks, you will experience swelling, but pain, bruising, and tightness will subside shortly. If there are any complications, speak with your doctor immediately.
