Are you tired of seeing areas on your legs that constantly look bruised? Do your legs feel tired all of the time? If so, you may have a problem with varicose veins. Varicose veins cause blood to stagnate or reflux inside small veins in your legs. Sometimes little spider veins will develop in the skin, which often looks like a bruise. Sclerotherapy treats the affected areas by injecting a medication that causes the spider veins to collapse on themselves, eliminating the stagnating blood inside the small veins. After the procedure, we recommend that you wear some form of compression to achieve the best results.
Dallas patients should consider all aspects of sclerotherapy. They wonder about recovery, the cost, and if they are the right candidate. Well, the team here at J. Hopkins Plastic Surgery will tell you here and now that we have your best interest in mind. If you’re worried about the risks of sclerotherapy, we are here to put your mind at ease. We will thoroughly assess whether you are a good candidate and take all necessary precautions to prevent side effects or risks.
Best Candidates for Sclerotherapy
The best candidates for sclerotherapy are the ones who are relatively healthy and don’t mind some minor discomfort during the procedure. If you have any questions about the procedure, we’re happy to answer any of them, so you can feel more confident walking into the procedure room.
What is Sclerotherapy?
Sclerotherapy is a medical procedure that effectively removes problematic spider veins and varicose veins. This safe, non-invasive procedure has been in use since the 1930’s. In most cases, a medical professional will inject a salt solution into the body through a very fine needle. Depending on a candidate’s medical history and the location and size of veins, they may inject either one or several veins at once. Before exploring sclerotherapy as an option, you should talk to your doctor about whether you are a candidate.

The cost of sclerotherapy varies widely. Factors that can influence this cost include the specific doctor performing the procedure and the extent of the procedure (one or both legs, one or more veins, size of veins, etc.). Also, the treatment cost may vary depending on where you live. While we cannot provide an exact estimate without exploring these factors, we can tell you that sclerotherapy usually costs several hundred dollars per leg. Laser vein removal tends to be slightly more expensive. Most people decide that this safe and effective treatment is worth the cost.

What To Do Before Sclerotherapy
You need to take some precautions before the procedure. If you are taking any blood-thinning medication or over-the-counter anti-inflammatory, you need to discuss this with the surgeon before sclerotherapy. You may need to stop taking these medications before surgery temporarily.
You will also need to avoid putting any lotion or oil on your legs before surgery. You will also be asked to not eat or drink for at least 12 hours before the procedure. There may be some specific preparations your surgeon will ask you, just make sure to ask a few days prior to surgery.
The sclerotherapy procedure is rather simple and only has mild discomfort. First, the surgeon will numb the area to be treated. Then a saline solution is injected into the vein along with some pain medication. Once the vein is injected, you may experience some burning or cramping for a minute or two. Afterwards, the surgeon may instruct you to wear compression stockings to make the sclerotherapy more effective. You will then have a follow-up a few days after the procedure.
After the procedure itself, you may experience some bruising or minor swelling in the areas treated. This is normal. You should see the results of the sclerotherapy in about 4-6 weeks after the injections. We stress that you wear compression stockings and follow the instructions that we provide to you after the procedure.
Side Effects of Sclerotherapy
Any surgical procedure will have certain side effects. Fortunately, the side effects of sclerotherapy are very mild and short-lived. Many Dallas patients will experience itching or swelling at the injection site that fades within a few days. Longer side effects include a bumpy vein or browning of the vein that will fade over time.
Many Dallas patients see the discoloration disappear within a year. If you have questions about any of the side effects of sclerotherapy, we invite you to speak with one of our experienced doctors at [phone].

“Our daughter is a patient of Dr. Hopkins. He is probably THE best physician we have ever encountered. He is meticulous, very knowledgeable and so very, very kind. I would go so far as to say he is OCD with his abilities and how he treats patients which is awesome. He also does not have the typical doctor ego, which we hate. He explains things and always asks if you have questions. He also is judgement free which is also greatly appreciated. If you are looking for a solid plastic surgeon for cosmetic or wound issues, we highly recommend him.”- Cliff M.
