eing a mom comes with so many joys, and it’s one of the greatest privileges you can have. But while pregnancy, breastfeeding, and motherhood are rewarding, these experiences take a physical toll on your body. While some moms can regain their pre-pregnancy shape through diet and exercise, others are not so lucky.

Through a suite of procedures known as the mommy makeover, our practice can help moms regain their former figure and feel more confident in their post-baby appearance. We proudly offer individualized mommy makeover solutions at J. Hopkins Plastic Surgery.

What Is a Mommy Makeover?

Moms all have different needs and different aesthetic goals. As such, every mommy makeover is customized to meet your specific objectives. Depending on the mom, a mommy makeover may combine a tummy tuck, breast augmentation, breast lift, and sometimes liposuction. The goal is to help restore your postpartum body to its former shape.

The benefit of performing all of these procedures as a single surgical event is that it streamlines clinical and recovery times so you can save money on hospital and anesthesia fees and abbreviate the recovery period.

A mommy makeover may include any of these procedures:

Tummy Tuck

Breast Augmentation

Breast Lift

Liposuction

During a Mommy Makeover, the following plastic surgery procedures are performed as one surgical event:

  • Tummy Tuck

If you have a pregnancy belly that diet and exercise cannot eliminate, a tummy tuck will tighten your abdominal muscles providing a slimmer, more toned appearance. This procedure offers many benefits, such as improving posture, reducing excess or droopy skin, and losing inches around your waistline.

  • Breast Augmentation

Pregnancy and breastfeeding can take a toll on the size and shape of your breasts, diminishing in volume or drooping over time. Whether with implants or fat grafting, Dr. Hopkins can restore your breasts to their pre-pregnancy fullness and shape.

  • Breast Lift

A breast lift provides a lifted and more youthful appearance, correcting sagginess and repositioning the nipples. Breast lifts often work in harmony with breast augmentation to add volume.

  • Liposuction

Liposuction can target fat in various body areas, such as the love handles, back fat, thighs, buttocks, upper arms, and chest. This procedure minimizes excess fat in these areas and produces a more trim silhouette.

When Is The Best Time to Get a Mommy Makeover?

As a rule of thumb, Dr. Hopkins recommends having this suite of procedures after having children and when you have a birth control plan to prevent future pregnancies.

This recommendation is simply because a new pregnancy or childbirth can undo some of the effects of your mommy makeover, causing you to lose some of the aesthetic benefits of your procedure. Waiting until you are through having children can help you protect your enhanced appearance and improved self-confidence.

If you’ve decided it’s the right time to have your Mommy Makeover, there are other criteria to consider before undergoing the procedure. Dr. Hopkins requires his Mommy Makeover patients to:

Be in good, general overall health

Provide Dr. Hopkins with their full medical history, including any medical conditions, current medications, and prior surgeries

Listen to Dr. Hopkins explain the procedures for their specific Mommy Makeover, and communicate back to him an understanding of the surgery

Be a non-smoker, as smoking can affect both the Mommy Makeover procedure and recovery

Have never had an allergic reaction to general anesthesia, if used in the past

Communicate realistic expectations for their final results

Be in good overall psychological health

Pregnancy, childbirth, and breastfeeding can all take a toll on a woman’s body. If you are ready to restore lost volume to your breasts, tone your abdomen, and slim your thighs, call Dr. Hopkins to learn more about how a mommy makeover can help you achieve all of your body image goals.

Having a Mommy Makeover qualifies as major surgery, meaning you must allow your body plenty of time to rest and heal. Most patients are ready to continue their normal activities within two to four weeks, though it may be as many as six weeks before you can resume strenuous exercise.

Before our team discharges you from surgery, you will receive thorough instructions for aftercare and recovery. Some general guidelines include:

  • Enlist the help of family and friends to assist at home and with children.
  • Clear your social and work calendar for at least two weeks after surgery.
  • Contact our office with any questions about the post-op instructions.
  • Take prescribed pain medication for at least three days post-op and on the recommended schedule without missing a dose.
  • Do not smoke for at least six weeks before and eight weeks after surgery.
  • Avoid lifting anything that weighs more than five pounds until cleared to do so by Dr. Hopkins.

How Do I Know a Mommy Makeover is Right For Me?

Ultimately, only you can determine whether a Mommy Makeover is right for you. You can learn more about the possible results through a consultation with Dr. Hopkins, setting appropriate expectations for your surgery. It is important to note that virtually all patients who see us for a Mommy Makeover are extremely satisfied with their end results.
