Woman Holding Hat on Head at the BeachDr. Hopkins sees hundreds of men and women from Dallas every year who are interested in having liposuction to achieve a tone, trimmed figure. After years of diet and exercise, stubborn pockets of fat can be detrimental both physically and emotionally. Even though liposuction is a relatively simple procedure, the effects it has on one’s figure is second to none.

Because liposuction is a surgical procedure, it’s important to remember that you’ll need time to recover. To help you know what to expect from your liposuction recovery process, we’re taking time in this blog to give you more information.

After Liposuction Surgery

Once you wake up from the effects of the anesthesia used to put you to sleep during your surgery, you’ll need to have someone available to take you home, as you won’t be able to drive yourself. Your friend or family member should also fully understand the dietary restrictions and medications you’ve been prescribed, what types of activities you should not take on, and that you should rest following your liposuction procedure.

If you don’t have someone who can stay at home with you during your recovery, Dr. Hopkins recommends you have someone close by who you can call on if you experience complications or need help in any way.

What to Expect During Your Liposuction Recovery Process

Expected recovery time varies from patient to patient and the area or areas on which the liposuction will be performed. When you visit Dr. Hopkins for your initial consultation, he will inform you of your anticipated liposuction recovery time. This will help you plan ahead to take the appropriate amount of time off work and arrange for help around the house if needed. Dr. Hopkins recommends his Dallas patients take a few days off work or school and avoid normal daily activities, including exercise until he gives you the okay to resume those activities.

To help you better prepare for your liposuction recovery, Dr. Hopkins recommends his Dallas patients:

  • Make plans prior to their procedure with friends and family so they can provide assistance at home for a few days.
  • Clear their social calendar for at least one week after their procedure to ensure they are able to rest and recover well.
  • Carefully follow the post-procedure instructions provided by Dr. Hopkins.
  • Take their prescribed pain medication on the recommended schedule.
  • Do not smoke or use other tobacco products for at least 6 weeks before and 8 weeks after surgery.
  • Avoid submerging their incisions in water until Dr. Hopkins has cleared them to do so.
  • Wear your compression garments as prescribed by Dr. Hopkins.
  • Maintain a proper diet and stay hydrated during your recovery.
  • Avoid blood thinning drugs or other drugs. If you’re unsure if you should take a certain medication, talk to Dr. Hopkins first.
